What? No slaughter rule in baseball....and no crying?
Submitted by diana on Tue, 2010-08-03 23:55You know you're a forever Cubs fan when you tune in to games like these in the 9th inning and you're thinking things like
"C'mon, we just need 4 back to back to back to back grand slams and we'll be back in the game!"
and you watch the game to its bitter end.
Is there a book for baseball broadcasters on things to say when the lack of a slaughter rule is really bumming out the staff?

ESPN reports on stadium food safety - Outside the Lines
Submitted by diana on Mon, 2010-07-26 14:11
Quote from website:
ESPN's "Outside the Lines" reviewed health department inspection reports for food and beverage outlets at all 107 North American arenas and stadiums that were home to Major League Baseball, National Football League, National Hockey League and National Basketball Association teams in 2009. At 30 of the venues (28 percent), more than half of the concession stands or restaurants had been cited for at least one "critical" or "major" health violation. Such violations pose a risk for foodborne illnesses that can make someone sick, or, in extreme cases, become fatal.

Chicago Cubs to honor 50th anniversary of legend Ron Santo's debut with the team
Submitted by diana on Fri, 2010-06-25 10:44Chicago Cubs to honor 50th anniversary of legend Ron Santo's debut with the team
Recognition includes ceremony, first pitch, seventh inning stretch, special flags at Wrigley Field and bleacher ticket promotion
The Cubs will honor Santo in a special pregame ceremony prior to their June 28 game vs. the Pittsburgh Pirates. In addition, Santo is expected to deliver the game's ceremonial first pitch that day and will sing the seventh inning stretch on July 1. Flags honoring his 50 years in baseball will fly from Wrigley Field's roof starting next Monday evening.

RIP Chuck Stine, played Herald Trumpet Fanfares at Wrigley ceremonies
Submitted by diana on Tue, 2010-06-15 00:53Chuck Stine was a Chicago area trumpet player. You can see him here playing herald trumpet fanfares at Wrigley Field for the Ryne Sandberg jersey retirement ceremony.

He's the fellow next to the WGN tv camera.
He also played at the #31 jersey retirement ceremony at Wrigley for Jenkins and Maddux, and I think also the #10 ceremony for Ron Santo, the 300th win ceremony for Maddux and the Ernie Banks statue ceremony.

Theriot's Attitude on Walks Inconsistent With Prior Performance
Submitted by cubsnet on Sun, 2010-06-06 13:51Ryan Theriot is sounding more like Dusty Baker, who managed Theriot in 2006, every day. Lou Piniella has recently been calling him out on his lack of walks this year. Theriot has just 8 walks in 228 plate appearances heading into play June 6, and had none from May 2 through June 4. His OBA is .305. For a guy that lacks power—save a strange May 2009 when he had 8 doubles and 5 homers—and plays slightly above-average defense at best, that OBA is too low.
In response to the exhortation of his present manager, Theriot has responded that “looking” for a walk is a “defensive” mindset that he just does not have (link via VFTB tweet).
But there are plenty of hitters who do not “look” for a walk and yet still draw them by being willing to take pitches that are not in a good hitting zone. Theriot must know this, for his performance this year is an anomaly.
Song: ‘I Married a Cubs Fan!’ - the story behind the song, listen to song.
Submitted by diana on Thu, 2010-06-03 14:58Marriage brings together Cubs blue, Cardinals red
http://www.sj-r.com/top-stories/x1332176987/Dave-Bakke-Cubs-Cards-rivalry-meets-in-Springfield-marriage-and-a-song-result
Quote from the State Journal-Register article...
Dave Bakke column: Republicans can marry Democrats. Catholics can marry Protestants. Rebs can marry Yanks. It usually doesn’t cause much of a ripple anymore. But when Cubbie blue married Cardinal red a couple of years ago, something did come of it -- a song.
Is it a deal-breaker if a potential mate's favorite sports team is a fierce rival of your favorite sports team?
