Sandberg Starts Column for Yahoo
How about this: Ryne Sandberg has started writing a column for Yahoo! Sports. His first addresses the topic of the day: steroids. Sandberg writes: "I have a question for Congress: Why don't you give Major League Baseball's new steroid testing policy a chance?"
Sandberg's position is consistent with, as far as I have been able to tell, pretty much the entire off-line and on-line sports media pundit communities.
The members of the House Government Reform Committee were, of course, seeking attention. It's what most politicians do. And Sandberg is right: Let's run with the new MLB policy for a while and see if it works. But all the Committee did was ask questions. No legislation has passed, and no legislation has even been proposed. The point of having hearings like this is to determine whether legislation is necessary. So let the questions be asked.

But didn't several of the Congresscritter say point blank that the current policy isn't stringent enough and threaten legislative action if it wasn't revised immediately? That sounds like a bit more than asking questions. I also doubt I'm the only one who noticed that once the ballplayers left, so did most of the politicians.

I actually didn't watch. I'm not surprised that some threatened legislation. I just think the possibility of them actually proposing any legislation, let alone passing it, is fairly remote.
I shouldn't have limited my statement so much. Congress never just asks questions and listens. They usually stand on their soapbox for awhile, too.
Much grandstanding, true. But, so far, no harm.
Sandberg looks out for his own
Ryno has taken the line most ball players are they are not going to make the game that made them millions of dollars and brought them fame look bad. I think its cool that the players and owners are trying to protect the game and showing some unity and loyalty. As a military man in Iraq I would hope my unit could stay as unified on something contoversal if we had to. Anyway I think the Congressnal Hearing was a witch hunt only targeting superstar players you know average players had just as much access to steriods as the superstars were where they? Canceco is a scumbag bitter player trying to make some money off his book and is a disloyal rat.
