Boise Hawks Looking to Change Name

The Boise Hawks, the Cubs' short-season-A affiliate, are looking to change their name and logo, reports Brian Murphy of the Idaho Statesman. The name change would not take place until next season. The problem, it appears, is due to the NBA team in Atlanta with the same name.
The franchise does not own the rights to the name "Hawks" -- the NBA's Atlanta Hawks do -- which creates numerous obstacles in marketing the team. "If we're making a T-shirt, we cannot have a T-shirt that we sell in stores say 'Hawks.' It must say 'Boise Hawks,' " [Hawks president and general manager Todd] Rahr said. "Is it earth shattering? Absolutely not. But we don't own our name."

The team will be "looking for something that truly identifies with the community." It doesn't appear they're looking for an outsider's perspective, but if they were, the only thing I identify with Idaho is potatoes. You can't name a team the Potatoes, you say? Why not? My home town team in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the Angels' low-A affiliate, named their team the Kernels. Of course, Kernels sounds a little better than Potatoes.

OK, if not the Potatoes, then what?

I've got it: The Spuds. The Boise Spuds.
