Angel
Pagan came up limp running out a groundball in the 5th inning. The
injury did not look minor, as he could not put any weight on his left
leg. If Pagan needs to go on the disabled list, here are the Cubs'
position player options on the
40-man roster: Catchers
Jose
Reyes and
Geovany
Soto, infielders
Ryan
Theriot and
Scott
Moore, and outfielder
Felix
Pie. None of these players are ideal options. There is no chance of
either Reyes or Moore being called up and little chance of Soto. Pie
needs to play everyday to continue to develop, so unless
Jacque
Jones's hamstring decides to cause further problems, Pie will stay
at Iowa. That leaves the light-hitting utility player Theriot. Given
these choices, it wouldn't be surprising at all if the Cubs went to a
12th pitcher, such as
Michael
Wuertz or
David
Aardsma.
UPDATE (4/16/2006, 9:40pm): Aardsma gets the call. Not a surprise given the way he's thrown, the lack of deep outings by the starting pitchers, and the lack of position player options on the 40-man roster.
