Profile of Prospects Sam Fuld and Jason Kosow

The Portsmouth Herald (N.H.) profiles Jason Kosow and Sam Fuld, two local players in the Cubs' minor league camp.

Fuld, 23, was the Cubs' 10th round draft pick in 2004 out of Stanford. According to the Herald, Fuld played his final season at Stanford last year in shoulder pain, and then the Cubs diagnosed him with a torn labrum after the draft. The shoulder pain is evident in Fuld's college stats. His first three years in college, in he had OPSs of 882, 979, and 879. Then, his senior year last year, he only had a 737 OPS, having lost most of his power. Fuld says he's now 100%.

Fuld has actually gotten into two games for the big league club this spring, going 2-for-3, both singles.

Kosow, 22, was the Cubs' 27th round pick in 2004. He pitched for both the rookie team in Mesa and then short-season-A Boise last year. In 33.1 total innings, he had a 2.97 ERA with a 28/18 K/BB ratio.

Both players appear headed to low-A Peoria this season.

Besides profiling Fuld and Kosow, the article gives a little bit of a look into the life of a prospect trying to make a minor league team:

The Cubs pay for housing, breakfasts and lunches for their prospects, but players have to score dinner on their own. Still, playing ball from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily under the hot desert sun, trying to catch the right eyes and nab that first promotion of the season isn’t a bad way to make a living.

"It’s still everything I hoped it would be," Kosow said. "It’s almost been a year and I haven’t gotten over that I’m playing baseball out here and that’s my job."
