TV listings for Cubs fans - April / May 2006

I was reminded Friday night that when games don't show up in the regular telecast schedule to check the cable company's local access channel.

Sometimes you'll find those Comcast Sports Chicago PLUS network games that aren't mentioned in tv listings, Tivo listings or even on the PVR guide.
You just have to know its there.

Update: This page lists the games that air on the PLUS network:
http://chicago.comcastsportsnet.com/plus...

Cubs games telecast schedule - includes Comcast, WGN, Fox and WCIU listings. ESPN games not listed.

----------

I would like to suggest that the programs that offer Chicago Cubs related content include that little fact in their tv listings.

That way, those of use who search for programs with keywords "Chicago Cubs" in it might actually find those programs that they've worked so hard to produce.

Here's what I found for my Cubs fan friends in addition to the regularly scheduled games...

It Happens Every Spring (1949) movie

April 20, 2006 by diana, 3 years 47 weeks ago
Comment id: 1188

AMC aired the movie It Happens Every Spring this past week.

It was a cute movie about a professor / scientist who discovers a fluid that would make a ball avoid wood.

Yes, I know - such a thing would be considered cheating these days.
I'm sure some batters thought Bruce Sutter had this potion back in the 70's.

I am curious where this movie was filmed. How many ballparks did they visit? They show a Cubs/Cards game where the left side of the park looks a lot like Wrigley Field. But the shots of the dugout and the rest of the outfield don't have the right look, so I wonder if they used some shots of Wrigley and mixed them with another park.

Or perhaps the previous Busch stadium or wherever the Cards played in 1948 had a similar design to Wrigley. I don't know.

Check this website to see when this movie might air again in addition to the upcoming Mon, May 8 at 5:00 AM Central airdate.
If you're recording it, give it a bit of padding time. When I recorded it, the PVR shut down before the movie had ended. :(

WHITE SOX & CUBS - Cubs' edge in TV ratings slips

Teddy Greenstein
Published May 26, 2006

Bottom line, the Cubs' popularity has taken a giant hit over the last two years. In 2004, Cubs games drew an average rating of 9.1 on WGN/WCIU and 6.5 on Fox Sports Net. (One ratings point equals 34,380 Chicago-area households.)

This season they're at 4.9 on WGN/WCIU and 3.4 on Comcast SportsNet. So the audience is down about 45 percent.

Wow, those TV ratings really are down quite a bit.

WGN's WB ratings vs. Cubs baseball?

May 26, 2006 by diana, 3 years 41 weeks ago
Comment id: 1305

I'm curious how WGN's non-baseball and WB ratings compare to their Cubs and White Sox game coverage.

It seems like they get far better ratings for Cubs games on WGN than Comcast, which makes sense because WGN has a much greater audience due to cable, satellite tv (including c-band/big dish), and over the air antennas. We could even watch the Cubbies on WGN a bit while in Florida, something we couldn't do via Comcast Chicago Sportsnet.

(Yes, I'd like to see more Cubs games on WGN like in the old days.
We get superior picture quality on WGN compared to Comcast.)

WGN

Comment id: 1306

I'd like to see more games on WGN as well, since I only have basic cable adn don't receive Comcast Chicago Sportsnet.

Additionally, I believe the Cubs are losing potential future fans around the country who otherwise would have grown up, like me, watching games on WGN.

Anyone watching Cubs vs. Braves via TBS?

Is anyone watching the game on TBS?

I like their graphics showing how the batter did in previous innings.

What other differences are their between the WGN/Comcast and TBS coverage of the game?

Cubs/Braves pre-game "Bloopers" show

May 30, 2006 by diana, 3 years 41 weeks ago
Comment id: 1324

Did anyone else notice the 15 minute "Bloopers" program scheduled last Friday at 1pm - 1:15pm on TBS just before the Cubs/Braves game?

I thought it was an odd length of time for a show and an even stranger timeslot for a program like that, since usually a timeslot like that would be used for a pre-game show of some sort.

Towards the end of the program was a Bloopers segment showing ESPN reporters cracking up while reading a 2002 news story regarding Kerry Wood.

I wonder if the TBS sportscasters (Chip Caray, etc.) viewed this just before their show started and that was why they seemed to be giggling a bit at the beginning of their telecast???
