Minor League Roundup 4-18-2006

Marmol and Gallagher finally allow a run, but just one; Marmol can hit, too; & Hoffpauir homers.

Iowa lost 7-6 in 10 innings. Here is how you know Brandon Sing isn't off to quite the start everyone would want for him (576 OPS through tonight's game): Ryan Theriot and Buck Coats (combined 19 home runs in around 3600 career minor league at-bats) are hitting in the middle of the order (3rd and 5th) instead of him. Raul Valdes had his first bad outing of the year, allowing 5 runs in 5 innings. Michael Wuertz threw for Iowa for the first time this year, following his demotion, in an extended relief appearance. He threw 3 innings and allowed 1 run. Michael Restovich had 3 hits, including a double.

West Tenn won 12-1 (7 innings, 1st game of a doubleheader). Carlos Marmol allowed a run for the first time this season, but it was only 1 run. He struck out 7 and walked 2 in 5.1 innings. He also had a decent game at the plate, to understate matters. He was 3-3 with a homer and 2 doubles. First baseman Micah Hoffpauir also had a big game, going 4-4 with a homer and 2 doubles.

West Tenn lost 4-2 (2nd game of a doubleheader). Hoffpauir homered again, his 3rd of the year, and third baseman Scott Moore hit his 1st.

Daytona won 8-2. Like Marmol, Gallagher gave up his first run of the season, but it was only 1 run. Gallagher gave up just 3 hits without walking a batter in 7 innings, while striking out 10. Adalberto Mendez threw his 7th shutout inning of the year in the 9th. On the season, Mendez has struck out 7 without walking a batter. First baseman Issmael Salas went 3-4 and is hitting .476 on the year. Rightfielder Ryan Harvey went 0-5, dropping his average to .225, and made his 3rd error of the year.

Peoria lost 3-2 in 13 innings. Todd Blackford allowed just 1 run in 6 innings. Leftfielder Jesus Valdez was 3-5 with a double and 2 stolen bases.
