The Booing of Jacque Jones

April 25, 2006 by cubsnet

18 games in to a 486 game contract and some Cubs fans are already booing Jacque Jones. That's a bad sign for Jones. It is also poor fan behavior.

Again, it's only been 17 games. Jones is not a great player. He has been serviceable against righthanded pitching in his career and for all we know, Jones will post an 850 OPS the rest of the way. In any event, Jones is not being booed for a lack of effort or for poor sportsmanship, he is being booed for physical failures. Physical failures occur all the time in baseball by even the best players.

The booing is having an effect on Jones. Today's Daily Herald quotes him as saying, "I try not to pay attention, but it’s so loud, so angry. I’m not going to hit .300 in one day or two days. They have the right to voice whatever opinion they want. I’m just getting used to it. I’m blocking it out as much as I can."

This would be a good time to re-read Transmission's article on booing at The Cub Reporter.

Booing Jacques Jones

Here's a new guy on the team whose presence should be welcomed. He's playing hurt with a hamstring pull but contributing. As of a day or so ago his batting average, weak as it was at .200, still exceeded that of Aramis Ramirez. Give the guy a break.

Respectfully,

He's not being booed because

He's not being booed because of his low batting average. I didn't boo him on monday b/c he kept striking out. i booed him after he swung at the first pitch after the last guy had just walked on four straight. and the pitch was in the dirt. Know the fundamentals and show some baseball smarts. if you don't, you get booed. just as hairston should be booed for stealing third and swinging at two out-of-the-zone pitches after two batters had just walked.

pure stupidity isn't all that different from dogging it.

and the whole thing about people being upset about boo's at a ballpark is silly, anyway. In no other city do fans get in huff because someone booed. I suppose it’s because other cities don’t expect to lose.

And you know what's even worse than booing? acting like your decision not to boo puts you on some sort of moral high ground. please. Now back to the game.
