Don't Blame Maddux
Well, it had to happen sometime or later. Greg Maddux's winning streak came to an end at Arizona when the team went down to a count of 5-1. There have been a number of Cub fans already ripping on Maddux on both sports talk radio and on the Internet.
These attacks on Maddux are completely unjustified. The Cubs have scored only 3 runs in the past 4 games for an average of .75 runs per game. It's difficult to win if your offense is incapable of coming up with anything more than 1 or 2 runs. Naturally, this puts a lot of pressure on a pitcher. Add in a pair of Michael Barrett errors and you have a nearly impossible situation even for a seasoned veteran like Greg Maddux.
Of course, there were some bright spots for the Cubs. JJ went 2 for 3 and even drew a walk. Both Michael Barrett & Juan Pierre drew a pair of walks. Add in the failure of the Arizona Diamondbacks to draw even so much as a single walk, and you have evidence that the Cubs are finally addressing what has been their single biggest problem for the past year or so: drawing fewer walks than what the pitchers have been giving up to the other side.
Hopefully, the walks problem is being solved. If so, that offers hope that by the time that both Prior & Wood are back, the team is not so far back in the standings to prevent a successful run to the top of the division.
