Garciaparra Playing Well at First for Dodgers

Last September, I advocated the re-signing of Nomar Garciaparra to play either shortstop (if Ronny Cedeno failed) or leftfield (with Matt Murton moving to rightfied; this was before the signing of Jacque Jones). The Cubs decided to go another direction and the Los Angeles Dodgers signed Garciaparra to play first base. Jon Weisman at Dodger Thoughts notes how well Garciaparra has played for the Dodgers this year. He is hitting .354/.416/.684 in 79 at-bats and 9 walks. It would certainly be nice if the Cubs had Garciaparra to plug into first base when Derrek Lee went down. Of course, the Cubs couldn't have known that Lee would go down, but they could have had Garciaparra plugged in somewhere else on the diamond, able to move there when he did.
