Wood Activated; Ryu Optioned to Iowa

So, today's the day that Kerry Wood makes his long-awaited return to the Wrigley mound, magically restoring the rotation to greatness, inspiring the Cubs' offense, and curing all sick children and puppies within a ten-mile radius. There hasn't been this much anticipation in a Kerry Wood start since, well, the last time he got hurt. And the time before that. And the time before that.

Myself, I'm willing to settle for six decent innings, and go from there. As happy as I am that he's back, and as well as his rehab starts went, it's important to keep in mind that he hasn't started a major league game for 10 months. There's bound to be a speedbump or two along the way.

Wood

Wood's day is done, after giving up 4 runs (and 3 homers) in 5 IP. Perhaps not the outing we would have liked, but on the bright side he didn't walk anyone while striking out 6.

That's quite a bright side, though. I don't expect him to give up 3 homers in a game very often, and if he can keep his walks down he figures to be quite effective.

So, like I said, speedbumps.

Wood's performance today

I traveled this morning, and returned home and ended up watching a couple of innings before coming back in the office. So I saw Wood pitch a bit. He certainly was pumping in strikes (52 of 71 pitches). His fastball was in the low 90s on the gun, and there wasn't quite as much break on his breaking ball as we're used to seeing out of him. But, I agree, if he can throw strikes like that, he'll be effective.
