Rock Bottom
On 670 WSCR today, Mike Murphy was talking about "backing up the truck" a.k.a. trading a bunch of the current players for young, but probably unproven talent. A few weeks ago I would have been 100% against that, but now I think I'd be almost 100% for it.
Despite the mega-slump the Cubs are in, they still have several players with pretty high trade value. Maybe it's not early enough to think about giving up on the year - but getting swept by the Marlins is about the worst thing that could happen.
So let's look at guys that we could trade for some young guys. Hey, it worked for the Marlins...at least against us.
I'd be willing to part with Just about anybody in the bullpen, including Eyre, Howry and Dempster. I also wouldn't be opposed to dealing anybody on the bench, and starters like Pierre, Jones and pitchers Wood, Prior (if he ever comes back) and Maddux (who deserves better).
Essentially, the guys I wouldn't part with are Murton, Cedeno, Ramirez, Lee, Barrett, Zambrano and Marshall. Everyone else is fair game.
One caller into Murphy's show made a great point. What's the difference if the Cubs are playing like they are with veterans or young guys? The difference is with young guys, they're learning on the job and doing so as a team, not being taken haphazardly and thrown into one of the brightest spotlights in all of sports and subsequently underacheiving (see Juan Pierre, Jacque Jones, LaTroy Hawkins etc.)
So let's keep those 7 aforementioned cornerstones and bring up some Triple-A guys and make some deals and see where that gets us. It can't get any worse than it already is. Can it?

The Untouchables
I'm certainly not opposed to trades at this point. I think the only players I consider untouchable are Derrek Lee and Carlos Zambrano. Not that I don't like having some of the other players on the team, but if a trade could be worked out that would make the Cubs better, then you make the trade.
Unfortunately, the Cubs aren't going to receive anything of value for any of their bench players, and there aren't many teams that would want to trade for Dempster, Eyre, Howry, and Jones with those multi-year contracts. In fact, I'm fairly certain that no one would trade for Jones. And no one's going to trade for Neifi Perez or Glendon Rusch either.
