What now?
The Cubs once again manage to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Terry Boers from WSCR put it best when he said the Cubs "went from seeing Carlos Zambrano almost pitch a no-hitter to just being kicked in the balls."
So after watching Jacque Jones miss a fly ball to blow El Toro's no-hitter to watching Ryan Dempster walk in a run to watching Neifi Perez do what I thought was impossible - commit two erros in about half a second.
I thought we hit the low point of the season when we were swept by the Marlins, but this is the lowest point yet, going from the eletricity of Zambrano's pitching to the suicidal feeling that followed Michael Barret's popout the ended the game.
So what do we do now?
We can't fire Baker, the Tower won't let it happen. I think the first thing that needs to happen is Jacque Jones and Neifi Perez should not be in the lineup tomorrow.
This is something that Baker needs to learn. If a player makes a mistake, they are punished by not playing the next day. But because he's too much of a player's manager, he won't do anything to remind them that while he might treat them like men, he's still the manager and he's still in charge.
Tony Womack should take Perez's spot at second. Why call him up to watch him ride the bench? Let him at least try to make a difference.
Put Jones' on the bench and let Freddie Bynum or another warm body play right.
There has to be an end to this slump. There is no way that a team with this much "talent" can possibly lose every game for the rest of year.
I'm not giving up. Not yet, but in order for me to regain some confidence in this team, management and general management need to do something to prove to me that they care about where this team is headed.
