Daytona Has Three All-Stars; Vasquez Promoted to West Tenn

The Daytona Cubs are sending three players to the Florida State League All-Star Game: SP Sean Gallagher, C Jake Fox, and 1B Matt Craig.

Gallagher has a 2.48 ERA in 65.1 innings and a 4.2 K/BB ratio. Gallagher was named to the Midwest League's post-season All-Star team last year after posting a 2.71 ERA in 146 innings for Peoria. He is still just 20 years old.

Fox is hitting .297/.376/.547 with 11 homers.

Craig is hitting .321/.421/.542 with 7 homers. Craig's selection is no surprise. He was actually an All-Star in double-A for West Tenn two years ago as a third baseman. He had an 872 OPS that year, but then regressed last year to a 799 OPS (after serving a suspension for testing positive for steriods). Before this season started, the Cubs indicated that they would teach Craig how to play catcher, but that hasn't happened so far.

If anyone was slighted it was CF Sam Fuld, who is hitting .350/.427/.483 and is 15/18 in stolen bases. Fuld played 4 seasons at Stanford and so, at age 24, is a bit old for the league.

In other Daytona related news, RP Carlos Vasquez was promoted to double-A West Tenn. The Cubs turned the lefthanded Vasquez into a reliever this year after he served as a starter his first three years in the organization. Vasquez had a 1.57 ERA in 34.1 innings (in 18 appearances) for Daytona before the promotion, with a 3.1 K/BB ratio. Like Craig, Vasquez was suspended last year for steriods use.
