Five Chiefs Named to Midwest League All-Star Team

"Five Peoria Chiefs are on the Western Division roster for the Midwest League All-Star Game to be played June 20 in Davenport, Iowa," reports the Peoria Journal-Star.

Ryan Norwood will be the starting first baseman. Norwood, the only Chiefs' player with an OPS above 775, is hitting .299/.332/.458 this season. Norwood was the Cubs' 9th round draft pick in 2004, out of East Carolina University. He hit .296/.327/.469 in 277 at-bats and 10 walks for Boise in 2004. His numbers are certainly consistent. He missed all of last year with injury problems.

The other Chiefs making the team are all pitchers: starter Mitch Atkins and relievers Matt Avery, Jeff Teasley, and Ed Campusano (the Journal-Star incorrectly has Atkins as the reliever and Avery as the starter).

Atkins has a 1.94 ERA in 60.1 innings, with 61 K's against 22 BB's. He's allowed just 43 hits. Atkins, 20, was the Cubs' 7th round draft pick in 2004, out of high school. He had a 5.03 ERA in 73.1 innings for Boise last year.

Campusano is the Chiefs' closer, with 17 saves. He has a 1.42 ERA in 25.1 innings. He has a 0.91 WHIP and a 5.0 K/BB ratio, striking out 40 batters already this year. Campusano is about to turn 24 and is in his third season pitching for the Cubs' low-A affiliate, so it is not surprising he's putting up these kinds of numbers. With a name like Ed Campusano, you almost have to be a lefty, and he is.

Avery has a 1.34 ERA in 33.2 innings in 19 relief appearances. He has a 1.13 WHIP but just a 1.7 K/BB ratio. Avery was a 9th round pick out of Virginia in the 2005 draft. He had a 4.62 ERA in 48.2 innings for Boise last year, all coming as a starting pitcher.

Teasley has a 4.03 ERA in 29 innings in 17 relief appearances. He has a 1.31 WHIP and a 4.5 K/BB ratio.

The Chiefs were 32-26, 3.5 games out of first place in the Western Division, entering play tonight.
