Wood to DL; Angel Guzman Recalled

Kerry Wood is heading back to the DL, and here's what I gather reading the article.

For one thing, Wood isn't hurt. He just needs an extra day or two in between starts. But maybe more, and really, who knows when he'll be able to pitch. So, off to the DL, but not because he's hurt. It's only for a short time. Anyway, he'll be back before the All-Star Game. But he's not hurt!

Frankly, I don't know what to believe.

Anyway, Guzman is back up, although it's not immediately clear what his role will be. Carlos Marmol looks to be in line to start for Wood on Sunday. With Rusch unsurprisngly ineffective in his two starts, though, Guzman may have another opportunity open up. Guzman seems to be coming along in the minors, pitching decently in his last start and the one before that.

I'd be hesitant to put him in the rotation at this point, and think that long relief would be an ideal role for him. And given the way the rotation has pitched lately, Marshall and Zambrano excepted, he might actually get into a few games that way.

Balsa Wood Finished

I know what to believe. Wood's pitching days at least as a starter are now over. Now its either the bullpen or nothing. Decent chance of a DFA by season's end.

Wood as a reliever

I agree, Charles, it's at least getting close to the scenario of Wood moving to the bullpen. Which would be too bad, given his longstanding potential, and some success, as a starter.

And Prior Too

Wood has already shown he can pitch relief, but Prior is still just as much of a problem as Wood - maybe more. The question is whether a mediocre Prior is better than the so-so pitchers of the shuttle bus to and from Iowa?

Wood in the pen not a bad thing...

So what are the thoughts about moving Wood to the pen? It's not too bad of an idea - except he'd be one pricey set up guy! So if fans had their druthers, which would it be - DL or pen?
As long as the DL topic is open, what's up with Angel Pagan? Thought I read something a few days ago saying that recover was slow going, but maybe it was a dream...

Baker says Wood won't be a reliever

Reports the Chicago Tribune:

On Wednesday, manager Dusty Baker shot down speculation Wood could go to the bullpen when he returns, which means Carlos Marmol or Sean Marshall soon could be the odd man out of a rotation that includes Wood, Mark Prior, Carlos Zambrano and Greg Maddux.

Why not send Wood to the pen if they can't be certain of his recovery time as a starter?

"Last year at the time when [Wood] was in relief, he didn't have that operation," Baker said. "So I'd probably say no because his turnaround time, his rebound time, is less now than it was then. He was throwing lights out out of the bullpen [last year].
