Miles: Cubs Lacking in Efficiency
Cubs beat reporter Bruce Miles doesn't hold back much in today's Daily Herald. He does a good job of summarizing the problems with Jim Hendry's offseason moves and other matters like Dusty Baker's use of Neifi Perez:
The Cubs just visited a team with a prototypical Moneyball player: Scott Hatteberg. The 37-year-old Hatteberg, a former Oakland player, ranked 11th among on-base leaders in the National League on Monday with a robust mark of .398.For this, the Cincinnati Reds are paying him $750,000.
Talk about efficient.
Now let's talk about inefficient, which leads us to the doorstep of the Cubs.
. . . .
The Cubs' obsession with speed and athleticism, as if they were building a track-and-field team instead of a baseball team, will continue to haunt them.
It's unusual to see beat reporters be as direct in their criticism of transactions and specific players' performances as Miles is in this article, because beat reporters depend on access to management and players. That access could end up limited if the team feels slighted. And when beat reporters are critical, they're often critical about the wrong things. Not Miles.
