Cubs Add Miguel Negron to 40-Man Roster
Here's something that slipped under the radar: As a condition for picking up 23-year-old outfielder Miguel Negron off of waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays in late May, the Cubs had to place Negron on their 40-man roster, reports the Jackson Sun.
Negron was hitting .215/.266/.300 for the Jays' double-A affiliate in New Hampshire prior to his removal from the Jays' 40-man roster. However, he has been on a tear since joining West Tenn. Negron has hit .400/.459/.600 in 55 at-bats and 6 walks for the Diamond Jaxx.
Negron hit .258/.304/.387 in 489 at-bats and 32 walks for New Hampshire last season. He was the Blue Jays' 1st round draft pick, 18th overall, in the 2000 draft.
In his recent review of the 2000 draft, John Sickels wrote of Negron: "Toolsy Puerto Rican outfielder was selected for admittedly budgetary reasons: most teams saw him as a third round pick. His minor league track record is undistinguished. If he makes the majors at all, it will be as a reserve."
