Veal, Three Others Promoted from Peoria

"Left-handed starter Donnie Veal, catcher Jake Muyco and shortstop Jonathon Mota will leave Peoria Monday morning for the Daytona Cubs of the Florida State League while left-handed closer Ed Campusano will join AA West Tenn after he pitches in the MWL All-Star game Tuesday night in Davenport, IA," the Chicago Cubs have announced.

Veal, 21, was the Cubs' 2nd round draft pick in 2005. He has posted a 2.69 ERA in 73.2 innings for Peoria this season, striking out 86 and walking 40. He only allowed 45 hits, but he'll need to lower that walk rate as he climbs the ladder.

Muyco was the backup catcher for Peoria behind Mark Reed, hitting for a 563 OPS in 38 games. He has also thrown out 20 of the 37 (54%) runners attempting to steal against him. Daytona needed another catcher after the promotion of Jake Fox. The Cubs drafted him in the 8th round in 2005 out of NC State.

Mota, 19, was the backup shortstop behind Dylan Johnston and had a 642 OPS in 33 games. He had a 574 OPS for short-season-A Boise last year.

Campusano, the Chiefs' closer, has a 1.21 ERA in 29.2 innings, with 47 K's against just 9 walks. As I have previously noted, "Campusano is about to turn 24 and is in his third season pitching for the Cubs' low-A affiliate, so it is not surprising he's putting up these kinds of numbers." It'll be interesting to see how well his success translates to AA.
