Lee Returns, & Marmol's Shot Ends
Derrek Lee has been summoned to Minneapolis for Sunday's game, reports the Chicago Tribune, after just one rehab game. Lee went 1-for-4 for Iowa in Saturday night's game. He was supposed to play for Iowa on Sunday as well, but Tony Womack came down with back spasms and Freddie Bynum has a "swollen right arm," whatever that might mean. One of them will go on the disabled list. It doesn't really matter which.
Meanwhile, despite a very successful debut, Carlos Marmol's shot in the rotation is apparently over for now. The Trib reports that "Angel Guzman is expected to take Carlos Marmol's spot in the rotation on Wednesday against Milwaukee." Marmol has allowed 11 runs in 11.2 innings over his past two starts, the second and third of his major league career. So the Cubs are going to try Guzman again, instead of the proffered advice of giving an extended tryout to Rich Hill. If the Cubs want to take Marmol out of the rotation, and they're using Guzman to do it, that's a demonstration that they have little confidence that Hill will ever be able to translate his minor league success to the majors.
As for Guzman, he's been back up with the club since the Cubs put Kerry Wood on the DL on June 9. In that two-week-plus period, Guzman has pitched in just two games. Perhaps Guzman starting on Wednesday became the plan after Baker couldn't figure out how to use him out of the bullpen. The last time Guzman pitched was June 16, a 5.1 inning rescue of a Glendon Rusch start. So when Guzman starts on June 28, it'll have been 12 days since he pitched in a game. His control and his endurance will be of concern.
If the Cubs want a reliever, rather than letting Marmol or Guzman languish at the end of Baker's bullpen, they should consider recalling Michael Wuertz, who is still on the 40-man roster. Wuertz appears to have found whatever was missing at the beginning of the season. Wuertz has dominated triple-A. He's allowed just 5 earned runs in 26.2 innings for Iowa on 19 hits (and just 1 homer allowed). Here's the really impressive part: 43 K's against just 6 BB's. (Kerry Ligtenberg has also been very good, but he's not on the 40-man roster.)
