Yes, the Cubs Really Do Lose a Lot of Baserunners

Baseball Crank has some research confirming what we've seen all year: The Cubs "lead" the major leagues, on a percentage basis, in losing baserunners via double plays and caught stealings.

losing baserunners

It makes management's concern over the years about strikeouts seem kind of quaint, doesn't it?

Don't forget pick off & Double offs

I have no stats to back it up, but don't forget about Phil Nevin getting picked off first this weekend against the Twins and Jones getting doubled off 2nd 3 times this year.

It's good to know that the rest of baseball is better than the Cubs...

Thought this team was a speed team this year?

Fundamentally in a Fog

At this point I am looking at the Cubs on TV and it is unclear sometimes just how focused on the game they are as individuals. They seem in a fog at times, as if distracted by their own bad performance. There is no apparent confidence or joy left in each other, and that is draining energy from each of them individually. You can imagine them saying things to themselves like "here I sit, no matter how hard I try, we stink as a ball club". Could we make a package deal for the Marlins, and send the Cubs to Florida??

Dusty's contribution

Anyone remember when Bobby Cox pulled Andruw Jones for jogging after a flyball that landed in front of him? Jones never, to my knowledge, did that again. Dusty was fuming when Bynum attempted to steal third the other day after getting a lousy jump when he stole second. But, as usual, he just chews on his toothpick and watches mistake after mistake. I wonder if Bynum would have gotten the message had Dusty pulled him...but he would NEVER do something like that. He's a "player's manager"...
