Cubs Team Report 7-3-2006
(Courtesy of The Sports Xchange) The Cubs say that Kerry Wood is not done for the season. But they also can't predict when he will be back. The right-hander, who had shoulder surgery last Aug. 31, returned to the disabled list after making four starts because of shoulder stiffness. The Cubs have him in a temporary shutdown mode and are not sure when he can throw another bullpen session. He will play catch for a week.
"We'll see how we progresses from there," Cubs trainer Mark O'Neal said. "I wish I could be more definitive. We'll accelerate it as quickly as we can. If the playing catch goes well over the next week, hopefully we can start thinking of doing something else."
The last time Wood did some heavy work was when he threw 70 pitches in a simulated game on June 20. He also threw a bullpen session in Cincinnati in front of Dr. Tim Kremchek last Monday. Wood was diagnosed with a muscle imbalance.
REPLAY: The Cubs salvaged one game in the series against their cross-town
rivals with a 15-11 victory on Sunday at Wrigley Field.
Winning pitcher Carlos Zambrano hit a first-inning home run -- his third of the
year -- to highlight a seven-run inning.
Angel Pagan, who came off the disabled list on Friday and turned 25 on
Sunday, picked up his first start and hit the first two home runs of his career.
Michael Barrett had a career-high four hits.

NOTES
--LF Matt Murton made his first start in a week since Phil Nevin moved
from first base to the outfield when Derrek Lee returned from a wrist injury.
Murton responded with two hits against the White Sox on Sunday.
--RHP Ryan Dempster, who blew his fifth save in 10 opportunities on Saturday against the White Sox, will maintain his role as the closer. Manager Dusty Baker said he likes RHP Bob Howry and LHP Scott Eyre in their roles as setup men and hopes that Dempster can straighten things out soon. The Cubs are convinced he is fine physically, but they will work on the mental aspect of his game.
--LHP Glendon Rusch (back spasms) is expected to rejoin the club Monday as a long reliever. He was eligible to come off the disabled list on Sunday.
--RHP Angel Guzman, who hasn't been used since a 5 1/3-inning relief stint against Detroit on June 16, figures to be sent back to Triple-A Iowa if the Cubs bring up LHP Glendon Rusch on Monday.
--RHP Wade Miller, who had shoulder surgery performed last September, will make his third rehab start for Class A Peoria against Clinton on Monday night. The Cubs hope he can throw five innings or make 65 pitches.

Guzman
I was hoping that Dusty would pull Zambrano after the sixth yesterday and let Guzman pitch the last three innings. Seemed like an ideal situation, with a six run lead, but no such luck.
