Williamson on Dusty's Guys and More
Scott Williamson made some interesting comments on AM 670 in Chicago Sunday morning, reports the Chicago Sun-Times. They're many of the things fans believe. It's interesting to hear them from a player. A review of the comments:
On Dusty's guys: "They have their guys they like for certain reasons. I don't know why. They go to them, go to them, go to them. It's good to be that guy. If you mess up, you get back out there. But the bad part is if you're not one of their boys and he doesn't have confidence in you, then you wear it."
Williamson may or may not want Ryan Dempster's job, but it's clear that he wants a bigger role.
On possibly being traded before the July 31 deadline: "They've got a Bob Howry, so there's no need for me. Hopefully I do get traded."
After the game, Williamson "clarified" this comment: "I never said I hoped to be traded. That's what kills me. I said I probably will be traded because I'm a free agent.'' If the Sun-Times has the transcript right, Williamson clearly said he hoped to be traded.
On Matt Murton: "I feel terrible for Murton. I feel a lot of stuff is not going the right way with him. This kid is going to be a superstar, a franchise player. He's a kid with a great work ethic. They didn't let him play and get his at-bats and fight through struggles.''
Though I don't think Murton will be a superstar, I agree he should be playing. After the game, Williamson said, "I'm saying a young guy needs to play. Phil Nevin has had an unbelievable year. He's better than maybe Murton now." Williamson's comments about Murton tie in with his comments about being one of Dusty Baker's favorites. "If you mess up, you get back out there." If you're not one of his favorites, your opportunities to fail are limited.
Finally, after the game, Williamson emphasized that this year's poor performance is not Baker's fault. That's something that a player has to say. It's also something that is largely true -- though Baker must bear some responsibility -- as a manager only has so much effect on a game.
