Veal Extends Earned Run Streak at Daytona to 18.2 Innings; & Grant Johnson Now Pitching Out of 'Pen

Cubs' 2005 2nd round draft pick Donnie Veal, a 6'4" lefty, has gotten off to an excellent start at high-A Daytona following his promotion in mid-June. Following yesterday's 7-inning shutout performance, Veal has now thrown 18.2 innings for Daytona without allowing an earned run. He's allowed just 11 hits, though he's walked 8. He has also struck out 13.

Veal was ranked John Sickels' 6th best Cubs prospect before the season.

Meanwhile, 2004 2nd round pick Grant Johnson, has apparently been moved to the Daytona bullpen. He threw two shutout innings in yesterday's 3-0 win to pick up his first minor league save. It was his fourth relief appearance of the year. Johnson has a 4.68 ERA in 59.2 innings this year after posting a 3.82 ERA in 73 innings for Peoria last year.
