Journal Star Profiles Davy Gregg
"Davy Gregg received an unusual request for a center fielder and part-time leadoff man: Slow down," reports the Peoria Journal Star. "Since doing so, the Peoria Chiefs speedster has showed signs of breaking out of an offensive slump. 'He was swinging, and at the same time he wanted to run,' Chiefs hitting coach Barbaro Garbey said. 'You hit the ball first, and then you run. The way he's hitting now, he's going to stay on the outside pitch and he won't have so much rotation in the upper body.'"
Gregg was the Cubs' 2005 27th round draft pick out of South Carolina. His "slump" this year is really a season-long one, and may not be so much a slump as his true ability. He's hitting .230/.272/.254 in 244 at-bats and 13 walks on the year, and has been caught 10 times in 29 stolen base attempts. Last year for short-season-A Boise he hit .280/.335/.320 in 300 at-bats and 23 walks.
Regarding the number of caught stealings, manager Jody Davis said, "That's the way we play. We're going, so we're going to get thrown out sometimes."
I'd prefer Davis to say, "We need to get that percentage up, and we're working with him to do that."
The entire team is 87-for-135 in stolen bases, a percentage of 64.4%.
