Radke Set to Retire After the Season
The Minnesota Twins' Brad Radke has been one of baseball's most consistently durable and above-average pitchers over the past decade, he's only 33, and, yet, he intends to retire after this season, reports Tom Powers of the St. Paul Pioneer Press. (Hat tip: ESPN.com's Buster Olney.) The reason he gives is understandable:
"It doesn't really matter if I'm pitching great or pitching terrible," he said. "It's about more than baseball. I'm a family man, and I have some family things that I need to deal with."Next year at this time, Radke said, he and his two sons likely will be fishing off the coast of Florida.
. . . .
"Our whole family has been through a lot," he said. "We were living in a house that had mold in it for seven years. The kids haven't been healthy. It's better since we got out of that environment. But it takes time to get that stuff out of your system."My little guy had some respiratory problems. When you live in an environment like we did for seven or eight years … My wife had a baby in that house. Your immune system is shot. But it's better now."
