Cubs Call Up Juan Mateo

There's no press release yet, but Inside the Ivy is reporting that the Chicago Cubs have called up AA 23-year-old right-handed pitcher Juan Mateo. (HT: The Cub Reporter.) Mateo will be added to the 40-man roster. Despite being in West Tenn's starting rotation, Inside the Ivy says that Mateo will be used out of the bullpen. However, the Cubs still need a starter for Thurday's game (what would have been Greg Maddux's spot). It's possible that if Mateo is not needed tonight or Wednesday, he could make that start. But with Rich Hill pitching tonight and Carlos Marmol tomorrow, it would not be surprisingly at all if a long reliever is necessary. The Cubs could then send down one of their relievers and bring up Angel Guzman to start Thursday. Guzman last pitched on July 28. We'll see if he makes his scheduled start for Iowa tomorrow.

Mateo was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the Rule 5 draft in the offseason and was returned to the Cubs. In 92.2 innings for West Tenn this year, he has posted a 2.82 ERA with 70 K's and just 26 walks.
