Michael Haynes May Be On His Way Out

The Bears' 2003 1st round round draft pick, defensive lineman Michael Haynes, may not be with the team much longer, reports Mike Mulligan of the Chicago Sun-Times, in a profile of Haynes:

Where did it all go wrong? How did a player of such promise end up with such an utterly ordinary career? One NFL scout said the problem is Haynes is simply too smart, that he'd rather study a werewolf than transform into one on the field. Another said he's too nice, a gentle soul in a game that requires psychosis.

There's a great message for the kids: stupid and crazy or bust.

The fact is, plenty of smart guys and decent men have excelled in the NFL. Things haven't worked out for Haynes for a variety of reasons. From his perspective, he's playing in a scheme that doesn't fit his skill set. He was drafted to be a physical, run-stopping defensive end with a chance to rush the passer in the Phillip Daniels mode, and he can't turn into a 250-pound rush specialist.

He has been forced to lose too much weight, then asked to gain it back. He has been moved from right end to left end and finally to tackle. He never has been given a clear playing field to show what he can do.

Simply put, Haynes is a rank-and-file NFL player who could have a decent career somewhere else.
