Minor League Roundup: Apr. 7, 2005

ICubs lose 7-5. As already noted, Mark Prior threw 6 innings, allowed 7 runs on 9 hits and 1 walk, while striking out 7. Interestingly, David Kelton, the last position player cut this spring and who recently cleared waivers, did not play. Angel Echevarria started in left and Ben Grieve started in right. Third baseman Mike Fontenot, who came over in the Sammy Sosa trade, had a double and a triple. Shortstop Ronny Cedeno went 4-4, with a home run.

Peoria loses 3-1. 2003 1st-round draft Ryan Harvey went 1-4, with 2 Ks, in his Peoria debut. Another 1st-rounder, Luis Montanez, the 3rd overall pick in the 2000 draft, is patrolling the outfield with Harvey this year. The Cubs sent Montanez to Boise last year to learn the outfield after he failed to progress through the system as a middle infielder. Starting pitcher Matt Weber threw 5 innings, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits and 1 walk. He had 3 Ks.

West Tennessee and Daytona were rained out.
