Ryan O'Malley Gets His Shot
I'm not sure this is what Jim Hendry envisioned when he was calling triple-A manager Mike Quade at midnight last night asking him who he could send to Houston real quick to start today's game. The answer was Ryan O'Malley. The Cubs' exciting 18-inning win last night (I stayed up, did you?) included the use of today's scheduled starter, Rich Hill, for the final two innings. Angel Guzman also threw three innings. In an attempt to avoid using Hill, Dusty Baker also used Ryan Dempster -- pitching for the third straight day -- for three innings. (Astros manager Phil Garner used poor Dave Borkowski (longest outing of the year: four innings) for six innnigs.)
Scott Eyre, who strained his right hamstring in last night's game, was placed on the 15-day DL to make room for O'Malley.
O'Malley, 26, who had to be added to the 40-man roster, has thrown 123.2 innings for Iowa this season in 26 games, including 19 starts. He has 71 K's and just 30 walks. Last year, he had a 6.33 ERA for Iowa in 27 innings and a 3.91 ERA for AA West Tenn in 78.1 innings. He has been a reliever for much of his minor league career. This is the first season he has started more games than relieved.

O'Malley's Debut: 8 shutout innings
Well, that was unexpected. The Cubs, who haven't had a complete game shutout from a starting pitcher all year, saw O'Malley throw 8 shutout innings today against the Astros. He allowed 6 walks in the process and struck out just 2, but only gave up 5 hits, all singles.
The Cubs won their 4th straight. Houston lost their 5th straight. With Houston having thrown Oswalt, Clemens, and Pettitte at the Cubs, and the Cubs throwing Juan Mateo and Ryan O'Malley in the final two games of the series, this has to be one of the more improbable sweeps of the past decade.
O'Malley
I stayed up, too, although I was fighting sleep from about the 13th inning through the 16th, before finally pulling myself out of it.
More about O'Malley from the official wrap. Turns out that in addition to the improbable call-up and even more improbable 8-inning shutout, he's a lifelong Cubs fan. I can't imagine what a great day this has been for him.
Re: O'Malley
he's a lifelong Cubs fan
With Ryne Sandberg as his favorite player. Perfect.
Fell Asleep...
I fell asleep around the 15th or 16th, and woke up exactly when the last wide-shot of the stadium was showing! I couldn't believe I missed it, although it was pretty late.
The O'Malley story is truly incredible. I loved the interview that I got to see later on, which can be viewed here:

Let's hope he gets some more good starts!

Watched the end of the 18 inning game
I watched it to the end, just waiting to see how we'd lose it. Didn't want to get my hopes up. Don't want to be that upset that late at night.
Was shocked to see that the Cubs won the 18 inning game...they really won it!

The Call (Bob Brenly, Ryan O'Malley, etc.)
Throught the history of baseball, minor league players have gotten word of their promotion to the big-leagues by telegraph, telegram, and face to face conversations. It doesn't matter how it transpires, the communication means the same thing. The penultimate, the arrival to the big league club.

RE: O’Malley heads to Cubs’ camp
That's some good news. His debut with the Cubs was such a good story.
Interesting that he mentioned in that story that some Cubs' pitchers showed up to camp out of shape and unable to pitch.
Where is Ryan O'Malley pitching in 2008 ?
Any idea where Ryan O'Malley is pitching in 2008?
The minor league webpages aren't updated often enough.
He's not on the Cubs 40 man roster.

Ryan O’Malley is heading south in the latest chapter of his professional baseball odyssey. He hopes this route eventually leads him back to Chicago, even though it would be on the South Side this time.
SHG grad Ryan O’Malley played in the Cubs organization from 2002 to 2008.
O’Malley, a Sacred Heart-Griffin High School and Lincoln Land Community College graduate, said Tuesday he has agreed to a minor league contract with the Birmingham Barons. The Barons, an affiliate of the Chicago White Sox, play in the Class AA Southern League.

My list of favorite White Sox (organization) players:
Ryan O'Malley
Jim Rushford
Nick Swisher (son of former Cubs catcher Steve Swisher)
Jim Thome
I see a Tim Blackwell listed as manager of the Winston-Salem Warthogs. Would that be former Cubs catcher Tim Blackwell?
Former Cub 2nd baseman Manny Trillo is the Infield Instructor for the White Sox organization.
Note: I see my photo of Manny Trillo is getting around.
