Minor League Roundup: April 8, 2005
ICubs lose 9-6. With only 17 career minor league home runs in 1679 at-bats coming into this season, Ronny Cedeno was not the person you'd guess would start 2005 with home runs in two straight games. But that's what he's done (see recap of Game 1). Third baseman Mike Fontenot also homered. David Kelton had two hits in his first action of the season, starting in right field. Still, Iowa lost its second straight. Starting pitcher Renyel Pinto allowed 7 runs, 3 earned, in 3.1 innings of work.
Diamond Jaxx lost 3-2. Third baseman Matt Craig is apparently appealing his suspension for testing positive for steriods. He started, hit cleanup, and went 1-4. The top of the West Tennessee lineup will be interesting to watch this year. Felix Pie, Adam Greenberg, Matt Murton, Matt Craig, and Brandon Sing. Some of the best position player prospects the Cubs have to offer (which isn't saying a lot). Ricky Nolasco had a good night on the mound. He struck out 8 in 4 innings, gave up 0 runs, and allowed just 4 hits and no walks.
Daytona won 2-1. Cubs' top hitting prospect Brian Dopirak got the season off to a nice start. He hit the lead-taking home run in the top of the 9th inning. Starting pitcher Anderson Tavares threw 7 innings, allowed just 1 run on 6 hits, striking out 3 and walking 1. Randy Wells and Adalberto Mendez both threw perfect innings to hold down the win.
Peoria won 9-1. Good night all around for the Cubs' low-A affiliate. Second baseman and leadoff hitter Eric Patterson scored 2 runs on a walk and a home run. Sam Fuld, Alberto Garcia, and Jose Rios each had 2 hits. The Chiefs were aided by 4 errors by Wisconsin. Starting pitcher Sean Gallagher threw 5.2 innings, allowing just 1 unearned run on 4 hits and no walks, striking out 6. Relievers Alfredo Polanco, Jonathan Hunton, and Jerry Blevins combined for 3.1 shutout innings, striking out 8 batters.
