Baker and Lee Differ on the Impact of Lee's Injury

Dusty Baker says, with regard to what would have happened had Derrek Lee not been injured this season, "you can figure he'd make up 10, 12, 15 games by himself," reports the Chicago Tribune. A ten game difference would put the Cubs at 64-67, 3 games out of the wild card lead.

Last year, according to Baseball Prospectus, Lee was 13 wins better than a replacement level player over the course of the whole season. Babe Ruth's career best was 18.2 wins above replacement level, in 1923. So it's near impossible for one player to have a 10 game difference over the course of a half-season, let alone a 15 game difference.

In any event, Lee himself clearly disagrees with Baker's assessment, saying, "The bottom line is we didn't play good baseball. Even if I was in there, if we don't play good baseball, we're not going to win. [The record] was more due to the way we played than the injury."
