Cubs Team Report 8-30-2006

(Courtesy of The Sports Xchange) Les Walrond's emergency start on Sunday, in which he was not able to complete three innings, was likely not good enough for him to make another start for the Cubs.

His next turn in the rotation would be Saturday because of a day off Thursday.

The Cubs could choose to skip the start in the rotation and allow Angel Guzman to pitch Saturday on his regular routine.

But the North Siders likely will go with left-hander Sean Marshall, who has been on the disabled list since July 23 with a strained right oblique. Marshall did not allow an earned run in 13 innings in his last two rehab starts for Triple-A Iowa.

REPLAY: The Cubs are now just 2 1/2 games away from last place in the National League Central.

Chicago dropped a 7-6, 11-inning decision to last-place Pittsburgh and committed four errors on the night, including an error by second baseman Freddie Bynum in the 11th to help lead to the loss.

Carlos Zambrano blew a 4-0 lead and committed two errors, allowing Pittsburgh to tie the game at 5.

Derrek Lee's 11th-inning single gave the Cubs a 6-5 lead, but the Pirates knotted the game and closer Ryan Dempster, who hasn't had a save since Aug. 14, walked in the winning run with the bases loaded. Dempster fell to 1-6.

NOTES

--1B Derrek Lee had three hits including an 11th-inning RBI single in his second game back from a wrist injury. Manager Dusty Baker said he would give Lee days off from time to time, and it's possible Lee will get a break Wednesday -- a day game after a long night game.

--RHP Carlos Marmol (shoulder pain) threw a side session Tuesday and could be in line to return to the active roster shortly. But it's not determined if he will be back as a starter or a long reliever.

--RHP Bob Howry, who suffered two losses in his previous three appearances, pitched a scoreless ninth inning in a 5-5 tie with Pittsburgh, helping to send the game into extra innings.

--RHP Jae Kuk Ryu, who was sent to Triple-A Iowa on Sunday, pitched a complete game Monday, allowing one run in eight innings but suffered a 1-0 loss to Oklahoma. He likely will earn a call-up when the rosters expand later this week.

walrond, and the cubs sucking all year

i was at that game and was thoroughly embarassed as most of us have been all year. our defense is the worst in recent memory. walronds velocity and movement seem imposing so i think he deserves another start. i am tired, however, of seeing new pitchers seemingly every day of the week. the only start i look forward to is zambrano's. cedeno needs to be at second base all the time regardless of izturis' injury. he sucks at short. bynum doesen't show much spunk either. i look at lee, ramirez, and pierre and wonder how long they will hold on to this "titanic" team always going down. stabilize the [] pitching staff and hire some talent. i don't care if we have to tear the ivy down and advertise. it's the 21st century []. the team deserves a winner to stay dedicated and you know the fans deserve a winner even more.
