Harvey Relaxes, Gets Better
The Daytona Beach News-Journal's Sean Kernan profiles OF Ryan Harvey and his surge since his four-homer game on July 28. Harvey is still hitting just .253/.293/.442 on the year. But he started the year with a 623 OPS in April, 436 in May, and 661 in June. He broke out in July, with a 1000 OPS. Unfortunately, he also had a 30/2 K/BB ratio during that month. His August plate control has been much better, with 19 K's and 8 BB's. He has hit .326/.383/.526 in August. His 20 overall homers is tied for second in the league.
Here's Harvey on the change: "I kind of went up there and said, 'Hey, it can't get any worse.' And I kind of took all the weight off my shoulders."
His poor plate discipline may be partially the result of coaching. His manager, Richie Zisk, is quoted in the article as saying, "They're not going to pay Ryan Harvey for walking. He's going to be a middle-of-the-order impact hitter. He's going to be an RBI guy." This isn't anything different than the rest of the organization says, but the approach ought to be: We know he has some difficulty controlling the strike zone, and to be a great hitter he'll have to do that. We're working on it with him.
In any event, Harvey no longer looks like the wasted first round draft pick he looked like two months ago.
