A Little Too Much Relief
Another sign of the futility of this Cubs' season, from Elias: "When Dusty Baker called for Jae-Kuk Ryu to pitch the ninth inning of the Cubs' 14-6 win over the Brewers, it marked Chicago's 522nd pitching change of the season, a new major league record. The previous mark was set by Felipe Alou's Giants in 2004."
There's also an impressive nugget about Greg Maddux in the linked article.

Cubs better than the Sox?!?
It also noted:
• Since July 2, the Cubs (35-43) have a better record than the White Sox (34-44).
Woah. I had no idea. That the Soxs were that bad since July 2.
Sox record
Good catch. It really tells us how disappointing the White Sox have been.
re: Cubs w/l record since July 2 better than the White Sox !

Cubs, Cards and White Sox W/L March - Oct 1.
I thought it might be interesting to compare the W/L records of the Cubs, Cards and White Sox month by month this year. Counts are my own and have not been verified. Tie games not included.
March - Cubs 15/13
Cards 14/13
White Sox 9/19 (they won 1 more spring training game in April)
April (regular season)
Cubs 14/10
Cards 17/ 9
White Sox 17/ 7
May -
Cubs 7/22 (that was a really long month!)
Cards 17/11
White Sox 16/12
June -
Cubs 9/18 (another long month for Cubs fans)
Cards 9/15 (a long month for Cards fans too)
White Sox 19/ 8
July -
Cubs 14/13 (hey hey, we're over .500)
Cards 15/11
White Sox 10/15
August -
Cubs 11/17
Cards 13/15
White Sox 16/13
September -
Cubs 11/17
Cards 12/16
White Sox 12/15
October - (regular season)
Cubs 1 / 0
Cards 0 / 1
White Sox 0 / 1
If the Cubs had maintained their winning percentage from July (one game over .500) each month, they would have won their division.
Any other observations?

ROCKFORD REGISTER STAR
How lucky were the Sox? Bill James, the father of sabremetrics, uses six indicators to predict whether a team will improve or decline from one year to the next. The Sox were the only team in baseball to register negatives in all six categories this year.
