Report: Cubs a Suitor for Sheffield
Newsday reported yesterday, in a report picked up by the AP and discussed by Bronx Banter, that the "Cubs and Phillies are believed to be among the most aggressive teams in pursuit of [Gary] Sheffield" should the Yankees pick up his $13M option for 2007 by midnight on Sunday in order to trade him. Sheffield would presumably man one of the corner outfield sports for the Cubs, perhaps setting up a Jacque Jones / Matt Murton platoon in the other spot. The Yankees are "willing to accept a package of prospects, bullpen help or a starting pitcher," reports Newsday. The Cubs certainly have a few young starting pitchers they would likely be willing to trade for immediate help. If Sheffield comes, he'll want an extension.

Sheffield
If this comes to pass, it will make clear what I suspected from the Lou Piniella hire: that Hendry's one and only goal is saving his own skin, and that he's more than willing to sacrifice the future of the organization to do so.
If healthy, Sheffield certainly can contribute with his bat. But, the idea of trading prospects for, and then giving an extension to, a player who will be 38 years old and coming off of a season in which he only played in 39 games is beyond ridiculous.
But, of course it's just a rumor....
RE: Sheffield
The trading pitching prospects for one year of Juan Pierre move certainly didn't turn out too well. Until then, Hendry didn't have much of a track record of doing that kind of thing. If Hendry has to give up as much for Sheffield as he did for Pierre, and then has to give Sheffield an extension to make him happy, that's certainly not a good move. I don't think he'll do it.
Sosa
The Cubs would be just as well off with Sosa as with Sheffield?
Both have an attitude and are past their prime. At least Sosa would, or at least should be cheaper.
Will Sosa be signed by his birthday?
I'm wondering if Sosa will be signed on or by his birthday?
Personally, I want to see him hit homerun # 600, preferably for the Cubs. Hey, I'd like to see # 700 too.
Happy Birthday Sammy Sosa!

Re: Will Sosa be signed by his birthday?
Diana, I'm guessing that you're probably in a distinct minority in wanting Sosa to return to the Cubs. I still wish it hadn't ended so badly for him in Chicago.
Sheffield???
Don't like this idea. Too old and hasn't seemed to put that "I'm too good for any team" mentality aside and become a team player. Late 30's is ok, but not for a guy who will offer no assistance to the younger guys who might be looking for that experienced guy to help them out. He is selfish and needs to stay in N.Y. where he belongs. We already had Sammy Sosa here to offer no help to the younger guys. We don't need to have another. Older for younger doesn't work in this scenerio.
