Cubs Select Two in Rule 5 Draft, Lose Five
Major league baseball held its Rule 5 draft today. The Cubs gained two players and lost five.
The players gained:
--OF Josh Hamilton from the Tampa Bay Rays (MLB portion of the draft). The Cubs immediately traded Hamilton to the Cincinnati Reds for cash. Hamilton was the first player drafted in the 1999 draft. He played 15 games last season (in A ball) for the first time since 2002, after his career derailed due to injuries and, more significantly, drug problems.
--RHP James Henderson from the Washington Nationals. (AAA portion). Henderson turned 24 in October. He converted to the bullpen last year and had a 4.50 ERA in 52 innings in high-A ball. He did strike out 56 batters in those 52 innings.
The players lost:
--LHP Edward Campusano to the Milwaukee Brewers (MLB portion), who then traded him to the Detroit Tigers.. Camupsano, 24, served as low-A Peoria's closer for the first half of last season, posting a 1.21 ERA in 29.2 innings, with a 47/9 K/BB ratio. The Cubs then promoted him to AA West Tenn, where he continued his success, posting a 1.75 ERA in 25.2 innings, with a 34/8 K/BB ratio. He did suffer an elbow injury last year. He has a decent chance of sticking with Detroit if healthy.
--RHP Lincoln Holdzkom to the Houston Astros (MLB portion). Holdzkom, 24, is one of the pitchers the Cubs acquired from the Florida Marlins for Todd Wellemeyer. He pitched at three different levels for the Cubs last year: rookie Mesa (2.08 ERA in 8.2 innings), high-A Daytona (0.00 ERA in 5 innings), and AA West Tenn (1.95 ERA in 32.1 innings). Fun fact: Holdzkom has never allowed a home run in 206.1 career minor league innings.
--IF Jason Smith to the Toronot Blue Jays (MLB portion). The Cubs had just signed Smith to a minor league contract in mid-November. He had previously been in the Cubs organization from 1997-2001. Now 29, he has a career 69 OPS+ in 414 major league games.
--IF Richard Lewis to the Kansas City Royals (AAA portion). Lewis, whom the Cubs acquired from the Atlanta Braves in the Juan Cruz trade, has fallen fast (possibly due to a broken ankle) since winning the 2004 Southern League MVP award.
--RHP Andy Shipman to the Oakland A's (AAA portion). The Cubs had acquired Shipman, 25, in 2004 from the Boston Red Sox in the Jimmy Anderson trade. He split time between AA West Tenn and AAA Iowa last year. He had a 1.76 ERA in 15.1 innings for West Tenn and a 3.81 ERA in 56.2 innings for Iowa.
