Dawson - HOF

Andre Dawson needs 75 percent of Hall of Fame votes to be announced Tuesday to get in. How many do you think he'll get (he got 61 percent last year)?

Seven of nine Tribune baseball writers voted for him (77 percent).

Dawson

I don't know how many he'll get, but, as much as I enjoyed watching Dawson play and as good as he was, he's not a Hall of Famer. To me, the fact that he was a corner outfielder with a career OBA 9 percentage points below the league average is just about automatically disqualifying.

Dawson

Dawson belongs in the HOF, for years he played on turf for the Expos, and every year he put up above average numbers. Then with poor knee's he won MVP with the Cubs, one of only a few players to gian this award for a lossing team. Dawson belongs in the hall, so if a hall of Famer reads this, Open the Door for Dawson.

Hawk

Actually, he played tons of center field early in his career.

And his baserunning and defense doesn't make up for oba? Really?

Dawson and OBA

I have high standards. His below league average OBA meant that he just made too many outs at the plate to be considered an elite player over his career.

True, he played very good defense for much of his career (including after his knees gave out, forcing the switch to right field). But his defense wasn't so great that it makes up for the outs he made at the plate.

As for his baserunning, his 74% stolen base rate is just barely above the break even point, making that largely a wash.

I believe Cubs fans are blinded by the magic of Dawson's 1987 season (a year in which he did not even finish in the top 10 in the NL in adjusted OPS+) and the way he played the game (which was much appreciated).

Again, Dawson was a very good player. I'm glad he played for the Cubs. But his career does not fall into Hall of Fame status.

Not Likely

If only 77 per cent of your Team's owner's Newspaper columnists vote for you to get in the Hall of Fame, you are not likely to have the needed votes nationwide. (Cub fans are an easily pleased bunch, that sometimes confuse the greatest player on the team with Hall of Fame material.) Nevertheless, I liked Dawson and his grit. Hope he makes it.

Respectfully,
FEARLESS BEAR

Stark On Hawk

Jayson Stark had a nice summation of why he votes for Dawson in his column today on the Hall of Fame. Linked to it here.

I mean, after the Hawk, Sosa was the best player on the team and would have been a Hall of Famer, but...

Now, I don't see any Hall of Famers on the current roster (now that Maddux is gone), unless Zambrano can keep it together for a decade (unlikely).
