Minor League Roundup: April 13, 2005

Pinto loses control, Nolasco pitches well again, and Patterson steals 3.

ICubs lost 8-3. Renyel Pinto had his second bad outing in a row (see story on first), allowing 7 runs in 1.2 innings. He gave up 3 hits and walked seven. Pinto has now allowed 14 runs in 5 innings of work to start the season. His ERA after two starts is 25.20. It's going to take 32 straight scoreless innings from here to get his ERA under 4. This is so unlike the Pinto of last year (2.92 ERA in 141.2 innings for West Tennessee) that you almost start to anticipate that the Cubs will announce he has arm problems sometime soon. On the bright side pitching wise, relievers Russ Rohlicek and Eddie Oropesa both threw 2 scoreless innings. On offense, Iowa had 10 hits and drew 4 walks, but only managed 3 runs. 2 of the hits came from Ben Grieve.

West Tennessee won 8-3. Starting pitcher Ricky Nolasco had another good outing, pitching 5 shutout innings (making it 9 to start to the year). He struck out 8 and walked 2. Felix Pie had 2 hits, including a home run, and a walk. Matt Murton, Brandon Sing, Casey McGehee, and Buck Coats all had 2 hits as well.

Daytona lost 5-3. Third baseman Scott Moore went 2-4 with a home run and first baseman Brian Dopirak went 2-4 with a double, but Daytona didn't have enough offense to come out with a victory. Starting pitcher Anderson Tavares gave up 3 runs in 6 innings on 4 hits (1 homer) and 2 walks, striking out 8.

Peoria lost 3-0. The Chiefs' bullpen threw 4 shutout innings, but starter Matt Weber gave up 3 runs in 5 innings, which was more than enough for Clinton. Second baseman and leadoff hitter Eric Patterson was the offensive star, going 3-3 with a walk and 3 stolen bases (he now has 5 on the season).
