Zambrano, Prior, Cubs Exchange Arbitration Figures

As Wrigleyville and FearlessBear note, arbitration figures are in:

Carlos Zambrano: $15.5M
The Cubs: $11M
Last year: $6.5M

Mark Prior: $3.875M
The Cubs: $3.4M
Last year: $3.65M

Prior's contract will assuredly get worked out before the hearing. Zambrano's might not, unless he and the Cubs can agree on a multi-year contract.

The figures mean that, unless the Cubs unload Jacque Jones, the Cubs' 2007 payroll will be at least $117.2M.

Sign Z for Multi-Years/Keep Jones

I think the Cubs would be smart to try to get a multi-year deal with Carlos Zambrano. That could reduce the initial year payment, and would give a sense of an anchor to an otherwise very "iffy" pitching staff.

Jacques Jones got off to a rough start last year, but in the end he showed he is a fine ball player. Unless there is some truly talented guy out there with speed who can throw better to the plate, I would keep him. (Has Kenny Lofton signed anywhere yet?)

Respectfully,

RE: Jacque Jones

Yes, Jacque Jones is clearly a useful ballplayer, as long as Piniella understands Jones's lack of success against lefties.
