Leyland Doesn't Sugarcoat the Neifi Perez Acquisition
When was the last time someone from the Cubs' management -- field or front office -- was this honest?:
Neifi’s going to have to prove us wrong this spring because he has not been a good acquisition up to this point. . . . [H]e showed absolutely nothing when he came over.
That's Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland describing Neifi Perez's play last year after Jim Hendry managed to trade him to Detroit. The transcript comes from the Detroit Tigers Weblog. (Hat tip: The Cub Reporter and Bleed Cubbie Blue.) After the trade, Perez hit .200/.235/.215 in 70 plate appearances. He is set to make $2.5M in 2007, under a contract he signed with the Cubs.

Re: Leyland Doesn't Sugarcoat the Neifi Perez Acquisition
lol. Thanks for the reminder about the best trade Hendry made last year. (Now if he just wouldn't of signed him in the first place...) Neifi is anyways honestly almost the worst hitter of all time.
Hey Neifi, Do you have Dusty's Number?
Well, the truth hurts those who deny it more than those who tell it. That's why Leyland is a First Class manager. I wonder if Neifi kept Dusty's cell phone number? He should call him for some mutual pity and self-glorification. (Dusty reallly aggravated me when he kept talking Perez up as a good ball player.)
Respectfully,

re: Neifi
In fairness to Neifi (and Dusty), he was not a bad player for the Cubs in 2005. He played a lot more than I'd have liked due to the Nomar injury, but as far as backup shortstops go, he was OK.
Of course, he was less good in 2006, but his playing time was cut pretty drastically, also. He never had more than 61 ABs in a month for the Cubs last year, after having more than that during every month of the 2005 season.
Plus, it's easy to praise Leyland for his honesty, but Neifi played far, far worse for the Tigers than he ever did for the Cubs. That's an easy target for "honesty" - not even Dusty would have been happy with a 450 OPS.
