Minor League Roundup: April 15, 2005

Wellemeyer starts and still can't control his pitches, Lewis continues struggles, at least Daytona won, and Patterson has 3 hits.

ICubs lost 5-1. How long before we have to determine that the defending champs are a truly terrible team? They're now 1-8, with their only victory a 2-1 win April 12. Todd Wellemeyer got the start tonight following his being optioned down earlier in the week. He only threw three innings, allowing 4 runs, 3 earned (shortstop Ronny Cedeno, who's hit well in the early going, made his third error of the young season). What Wellemeyer went down to work on -- his control -- still needs work. He walked 4, hit a batter, and threw a wild pitch. Jermaine Van Buren had a good outing out of the bullpen, pitching 2 shutout innings with 3 K's and no hits allowed. The offense only had 3 hits and didn't draw a walk. Second baseman Richard Lewis, who had such a good year at West Tennessee last year (.329/.391/.532) before struggling at Iowa in the final month of the season, has picked up where he left off. He went 0-3 and is now 4-36 on the season, with no walks and 6 K's.

West Tennessee lost 9-3. Starting pitcher Rich Hill again struggled, giving up 8 runs in 4 innings on 10 hits (including 3 homers) and 2 walks. Both third baseman Matt Craig and catcher Jose Reyes went 2-4 with a double.

Daytona won 5-4, in 10 innings. Starting pitcher JR Mathes threw 4 innings without allowing an earned run (making it 10 to start the season), though he did allow 3 unearned runs. Relievers Brad Stiles and Juan Mateo then pitched 6 innings combined and allowed just 1 run as Daytona won in extra innings. Brian Dopirak had 2 hits and Kevin Collins had 3, including a double.

Peoria lost 14-2. Starting pitcher Darin Downs had a bit of a rough night. He allowed 8 runs in 1.1 innings, as all 8 baserunners he allowed came around to score. Second baseman Eric Patterson went 3-4 with a walk as the lone offensive brightspot.
