What is with all the walks?
I watched today's game, and though they lost, I was amazed at the way, for the most part, the Cubs' hitters worked the count, and I am more amazed at who in particular is doing it. Jason and I had a discussion a few days ago about this, but I wanted to expand on it.
I was looking at Cubs stats a few days ago to see who was leading the team in walks, and I was amazed at the number of players I didn't expect to see up near the top of that list. For example, as of today, Cesar Izturis is leading the team in that category. That is not something you would expect, even in spring training, from a guy with a career .290 OBP. Ronny Cedeno is tied for third. It makes me wonder if the Cubs hitters are buying into what Piniella and Perry are preaching. We'll know soon enough, but it is certainly a good sign for the future.
