Guzman to DL; Gallagher Called Up
The Angel Guzman as future closer story is certainly on hold, following his being on placed on the 15-day disabled list yesterday. Guzman has right forearm tightness. Assistant GM Randy Bush said, "He has some injury history going back [I'll say!], so we feel for his own peace of mind we'll let the doctor look at it."
Carlos Marmol will now be the new late-inning fad.
It is interesting that the Cubs decided to call up Sean Gallagher, 21, from double-A Tennessee to take Guzman's spot. Gallagher has only pitched out of the bullpen one time in his minor league career, that occurring with the Cubs' rookie ball team in Mesa in 2004. He will also have to added to the 40-man roster. Who will be taken off? Perhaps Wade Miller or Brian Dopirak. Meanwhile, the Cubs leave Neal Cotts, Clay Rapada, and Rocky Cherry -- all already on the 40-man roster -- in Iowa.

What was that?
Back from the Cubs game. I was furious at the game, wondering how they could justify tossing Lilly with no warning after letting Hudson off scot-free last night. Now I get home and read they had the ump miked and he said he threw Lilly out because he "knew he was going to do it" and "was waiting for it." So the umpiring crew collectively believes:
A- Lilly was going to hit someone so as soon as he hit any batter in the game, Lilly would be gone but...
B- Hudson didn't mean to hit the guy who hit three homers with the first pitch of the game Saturday.
Evan acknowledging my bias as a Cubs fan (and my frustration with yet another one-run loss, not to mention the Sopranos' non-ending), I can't fathom any way to logically reconcile those two positions. It's just inexplicable. Or are we simply playing with different rules depending on the whims of whomever is behind the plate on any given night? I'd love for someone to give me a coherent explanation.
Coherent Explanation
I'm afraid you're not going to get a coherent explanation for that.
