Minor League Roundup: April 22, 2005
Frese returns, and Matt Murton is Barry Bonds.
ICubs win 5-2. Bobby Brownlie threw 6 innings, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits and a walk, striking out 3. Reliever Jermaine Van Buren struck out the side in the 7th. Shortstop Nate Frese returned following his strange fainting incident earlier in the month to go 2-3 with a double and 2 runs scored. Ben Grieve hit his 4th homer of the year before being called up.
West Tenn wins 9-4. Leftfielder Matt Murton went 2-3 with a double and 2 walks. Murton is hitting .491/.561/.719 on the year now. After the game, Diamond Jaxx manager Bobby Dickerson said of Murton, "For lack of a better comparison, he's having an effect on the lineup like a Barry Bonds," reports the Jackson Sun. "I can't find a better way to put it. I don't know how else to put it." West Tenn had other good offensive performances in this game as well. Centerfielder Dwaine Bacon went 1-3 with 2 walks, rightfielder Adam Greenberg went 2-5, and first baseman Casey McGehee went 2-4 with a double.
Daytona wins 8-7. Starting pitcher Sean Marshall threw 5 innings of 1 run, none earned, ball, before the bullpen struggled. Still, Daytona hung on to win despite 4 errors. Both first baseman Brian Dopirak and leftfielder Kevin Collins homered, for both of them their third. Centerfielder Chris Walker had 2 hits and his 11th stolen base.
Peoria wins 11-4. Starting pitcher Chris Shaver had a nice outing, going 7 innings, allowing just 1 run while striking out 8. Centerfielder Sam Fuld went 3-5 with a triple and a walk. Rightfielder Ryan Harvey and DH Mike Mallory both reached base 3 times.
More Dickerson on Murton: ''He's the hottest guy I've ever managed at this point. I've never seen anything like it.''
