Cubs Site OPS in Fukudome Press Release

The Daily Herald's Bruce Miles says there is reason for optimism in the Cubs' use of relevant statistical analysis. The Cubs cited Kosuke Fukudome's OPS in its press release and Jim Hendry referred to Fukudome's on-base percentage during a conference call with reporters. It's a start.

To be honest, it seems that most of the OBP aversion left with Dusty. I don't recall Piniella downplaying the importance of patience at the plate, although maybe he did and I forgot.

It is good to see Hendry at least talk about it, though. He's obviously been very fond of guys who swing away as long as they can run, and this of course continued with the Soriano signing. I haven't really made up my mind about the Fukudome signing yet, but if there's one thing I am excited about, it's that Fukudome seems to have an approach more like Derrek Lee's and less like Soriano's.
