Cubs Recall Ohman
The Chicago Cubs recalled lefthanded reliever Will Ohman from Iowa and placed Chad Fox on the 15-day disabled list. Fox is awaiting the results of an MRI on his right elbow following his injury last night.
In 8.2 innings this year for Iowa, Ohman had allowed 4 runs on 4 hits (including 2 homers) and 2 walks, and struck out 11. He's pitched 15 innings in his career in the big leagues, with a 54 ERA+, but his last action came in 2001 before arm injuries derailed him.
Given that Todd Wellemeyer made the team out of spring training, only to be sent down when Mark Prior came off the disabled list, he would have seemed the logical call-up. That is especially so given the Cubs already have three lefties in the bullpen (Remlinger, Rusch, and Bartosh). But the Cubs put Wellemeyer in the starting rotation at Iowa, and in three starts so far, he still hasn't found the necessary control. He's walked 12 in 11.1 innings.
Ohman got into tonight's game, pitching .2 innings, allowing two hits and a walk (intentional), striking out one, and left with the bases loaded.
