Dubois to Get Bulk of Playing Time in Left After All

He's the starter, and then he's not. Now he is again. "[Dusty] Baker . . . informed [Jason] Dubois over the weekend of the imminent switch," reports the Chicago Tribune's Paul Sullivan. "'He just said 'Be ready, your opportunity is going to come,'' Dubois said. 'I'm just waiting on those opportunities when they're presented.' . . . Baker confirmed after [tonight's game] Dubois will get the bulk of the playing time in left."

This report raises the question of whether Dubois was the mysterious source for Sullivan's initial report.

This report raises another question: What is Dusty Baker thinking? On Monday, Baker says, when asked if there has been reconsideration of the Dubois/Hollandsworth platoon, "No," according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Then on Tuesday, Baker states, "I was going to do that [play Dubois the bulk of the time] anyway." Baker goes on to say, "I just wasn't going to tell you guys. I have a plan, even though it might not make sense some time, and I don't say it. I had an idea in my mind."

Question left unanswered: What benefit was there in Baker deceiving the press on Monday?

The only answer I can come up with (perhaps someone else can come up with something better), is that Baker did not want the Mets to know that starting pitcher Kris Benson would be facing Dubois instead of Hollandsworth tonight. They'll prepare for one, but we'll give them the other. Dubois did hit a home run in his second plate appearance tonight. But certainly the Mets had scouting reports ready on both Dubois and Hollandsworth, so that explanation seems highly unlikely.
