Baker: Cedeno May Start to Get More Playing Time; Hairston to Bench
"Jerry Hairston might lose his job as the Cubs' starting second baseman long before Todd Walker (sprained left knee) returns from the rehab assignment he began Saturday with Class AAA Iowa," reports the Chicago Sun-Times. "Manager Dusty Baker said Saturday that he has been considering shifting Neifi Perez from shortstop to second to give rookie Ronny Cedeno a chance to start at short. That would put Hairston back on the bench, thanks in part to Baker and his coaching staff being dissatisfied with his lack of awareness in some situations."
In limited playing time coming in to today, Cedeno has gone 3-12 with 1 homer and 0 walks. Hairston is hitting .255/.360/.327 and Perez is hitting .283/.325/.442. Coming into this year, Hairston had an adjusted OPS 6% below league average in 2086 plate appearances. Perez had an adjusted OPS 18.5% below league average in 4514 plate appearances.
In Walker's first game in his rehab assignment last night, he went 0-3 with a strikeout.
Also in last night's game for Iowa, Joe Borowski continued his rehab assignment, throwing a scoreless inning and allowing 1 walk.
