Mitre To Start on Tuesday
The Iowa Cubs are losing two starting pitchers. First, with speculation about Tuesday's starter for Chicago also involving Raul Valdez and Todd Wellemeyer, "Sergio Mitre will start on Tuesday for the Cubs against Houston, making his 12th big league start and first this year," reports MLB.com. No source is stated for the report. Mitre has a 4.60 ERA in 45 innings for Iowa this year. Mitre may have won the start with his performance in his last start, in which he threw 6 shutout innings. Unfortunately, that was against the worst offensive team in the Pacific Coast League.
The second starter the ICubs are losing is veteran lefthander Darren Oliver. MLB.com merely reports that he "has left the team." Oliver, who the Cubs just signed this month, had a 13.50 ERA in three starts for Iowa.

i wouldn't say..
The Cubs are "losing" Darren Oliver. That sounds like he'll be missed. Anyway, if Mitre can only throw 6 shutout innings against the worst offensive team in the Pacific league, then at least he gets the Astros, right?

Yes, by "losing" Oliver, the Cubs are gaining much. And it is good that Mitre is going to be facing the Astros, and not the Cardinals.
Mitre
Mitre's ERA doesn't look great at Iowa this year, but his rate stats aren't bad at all, and he was quite good for the I-Cubs last season. He's certainly been the equal of Raul Valdez, who also is not even on the 40-man. I've not followed the logic of that particular speculation.
Thank God Oliver didn't have a fluke good start for Iowa, though. I actually saw him in Tucson earlier this season, and he's got nothing left. Assuming he had much to begin with...
Not only was Mitre very good
Not only was Mitre very good for Iowa last year, but he has been consistently good in the minors each year. It's why he keeps getting to pitch when others go down. Nice to see him take advantage of this latest opportunity.
